MTS is launching an alternative energy project in Ukraine in which a number of base stations will be powered by wind turbines.

The operator claims to be the first in Ukraine to dabble in alternative energy as a power source for its network.

Under the pilot project, several of MTS Ukraine’s base stations in the Crimea will be partly switched over to wind power provided by generators from American supplier Bergey WindPower.

Plans to instal wind generators in east Ukraine are also being considered; the year-round wind in these areas makes them ideal testing grounds for the project.

In Russia, MTS is already harnessing renewable energy, using wind power on a base station in Karelia and solar power in Krasnodar. Even hydrogen fuel cells are being used in some Moscow district boroughs.
